[box background=”green”]Growth Of Taekwondo

Since the early 1970s, participation in taekwondo has grown dramatically due these milestones:

  • In 1983, Kukkiwon started the World Taekwondo Academy to train taekwondo masters. Over 5 million masters — who are destined to be taekwondo’s future leaders — have been produced through the academy.
  • In 1988, Taekwondo became a demonstration sport at the Seoul Korea Olympic Games
  • In 2000, Taekwondo became an official Olympic sport at the Sydney Australia Olympic Games
  • In 2006, Kukkiwon opened the Research Institute of Taekwondo which aims at strengthening the academic foundations of taekwondo by conducting research on the history and spirit of taekwondo and further developing the poomsae (defined pattern of defense-and-attack motions or “forms”)

Today Taekwondo is an international martial art with over 80 million practitioners in more than 200 countries. [/box]
